1. After upgrading to Access 2007, the command buttons in my database no longer work. What can I do?
2. Access 2007 ribbons are cumbersome. I just want quick and easy access to all the most used commands. Is there a way to customize my database so that all my favorite commands are in one spot?

1. After upgrading to Access 2007, the command buttons in my database no longer work. What can I do?

My database opens to a main screen. From the main screen, users have to click one of many different command buttons to enter the main data entry screens. After upgrading to Access 2007, the database will open, but none of the command buttons on the main screen work. What's wrong, and how can I fix this?

One of the most common problems people have, after upgrading their Access database to Access 2007, is that their command buttons no longer work. For instance, your Access database may have command buttons used to open specific screens and reports. Then, upon converting the database to Access 2007, these buttons no longer work. You click on them and nothing happens.

This is because Access 2007 has tighter security settings and it senses that your command buttons are macros. If the command buttons in your database don't work after upgrading your database to Access 2007, then you may need to change the macro settings in your upgraded version.

Following are step-by-step instructions for changing the macro settings in Access 2007
  • Click the Office Button in the upper left-hand corner of the database.
  • A menu will drop down. Click Access Options.
  • After clicking Access Options a pop-up dialog box will appear. Click Trust Center in the left navigation pane (highlighted in the diagram below). After entering the Trust Center, click the Trust Center Settings button - on right hand side of the Trust Center. See the following diagram, the Trust Center Settings button is outlined in red.
The Trust Center allows you to manage security settings for your Access Database. These are the settings you need to change in order for the command buttons to work in your upgraded 2007 Access database.. Specifically the settings that need to be adjusted are the macro settings.

  • Once the Trust Center Settings dialog box opens, click the Macro Settings option on the left-hand menu. Then make sure the Enable all macros (not recommended; potentially dangerous code can run). Don't worry, enabling all macros will not be dangerous unless you regularly download Access databases off the internet or from email.

Now that you've enabled all macros, feel free to close your database and reopen it. After closing and reopening your database, all command buttons should work, just fine.

As more and more businesses upgrade their Microsoft Office Suite they are finding some unique features in Access 2007. For one thing, Access 2007 does not have the traditional toolbars and menu that users have grown accustomed to over the past 15 years. Instead Microsoft has introduced command ribbons. The ribbons look and feel quite different from menus and toolbars and do take some getting used to.

One way to make the tools and commands more user-friendly in Access 2007 is to use the Quick Access Toolbar. All your most frequently used commands can be grouped together on the Quick Access Toolbar. Following are some step-by-step guidelines for customizing the Access 2007 Quick Access Toolbar

  • The Quick Access Toolbar provides a place to hold your most commonly used commands. The Quick Access Toolbar is universally available throughout your Access database. You may use it whether you are working with forms, reports, or queries. Upon first entry into your new Access 2007 database you will notice that the Quick Access Toolbar has only a few command buttons.
  • To add more command buttons, simply click on the arrow to the right of the toolbar. A menu of commonly used commands will drop down. As you select the commands you want, the appropriate buttons will start to appear on the toolbar itself.

  • Following is an example of a fully-loaded Quick Access Toolbar.

Window Commands:

  • Minimizing, Maximizing and Closing windows are all managed in the Window Command area.
